I am Joni Kling,  a multi-disciplinary artist from Rotterdam with a foundation in illustration. My work includes large mural paintings; small hand-dawn illustrations; designs for fashion; and performance- and tattoo-art. 

My inspiration comes from ancient cultures and modern abstract art. By combining the mythological with abstract  line art I’ve created a very defined style that is in constant development. 

I have a ritualistic process: mostly starting with material and colour selection; and without planning my every step. I let my subconscious mind take over and allow my work to emerge from the materials and on the canvas. Autobiographical elements are often present, coming to life through cubistic figures. This allows my work to resonate with other people, who often see something recognizable. 

In a society where everything has a purpose I like to get lost in a world where there doesn’t have to be. Creating is the purest form of expression without being constrained society. Finding my way in life through painting and creating. Something that will never stop or be complete. Everybody can and may interpret it in it’s own way and maybe help you understand your own thoughts and feelings, open doors which haven't been opened yet. The work will lead a life on its own, and that's the beauty of art. I don’t want to impose anything on anybody. It’s just a feeling from the core which speaks through color, material and composition.

De figuren van Joni Kling (1986) lijken te wonen in een vervlogen tijd vol sierlijke spelonken, gebeeldhouwde oermensen en statige ranke dieren. Met haar strakke en tegelijk sierlijke lijnen zoekt ze naar een constante spanning tussen directe emotie en zalige abstractie.  

 

In snoeihard zwart/wit plaatst ze iedere lijn en stip nauwkeurig terwijl er in haar gekleurde werk meer ruimte is voor onbestemde vlakken, maar ook daar behoudt ze steevast de klassieke klare lijn. Dan weer lyrisch, en dan weer to the point, soms vagelijk onzeker en dan weer Rotterdams recht voor je raap. Hiermee vangt ze zonder het te weten het tijdsbeeld van haar woonplaats Rotterdam. 

Vaak omlijst ze het werk met een zwarte band, alsof ze de wereld buiten wil sluiten, en aan te geven: “alles wat zich hier binnen afspeelt is van mij”. Maar hierbij sluit ze niemand uit, integendeel, de kijker mag meedoen als figurant in haar haast keizerlijk symmetrische wereld.
